An Introduction to Lawn Bowling
When do I need venue hire?
Venue hire applies when you need indoor spaces, conferencing setups, or exclusive use of the club.
Can we combine bowls with conferencing?
Absolutely. Add bowls to any conference or meeting booking for $30 + GST per person.
What does Exclusive Use include?
Sole access to the entire club: greens, lounge, bar, outdoor areas and facilities.
Do you allow self-catering or external caterers?
Self-Catering Welcome
We would never limit your choice of catering or dining style — you’re welcome to bring in your favourite food, homemade dishes, or preferred caterer to make your event your own.
We also encourage groups to support our fantastic Mt Eden Village restaurants, many of which offer easy platters, shared plates, grazing options and delivery. It’s a great way to enjoy exceptional local food while hosting your event at our club.
However, self-catered food does create additional work for our team, including rubbish removal, food waste disposal and resetting the venue for incoming bookings. To keep the club clean, safe and ready for play, a Self-Catering Fee applies.
Self-Catering Fee
Standard Groups: $50 to $150 + GST
Large Groups (50+): $250 + GST.
This fee covers:
Disposal of all food waste, packaging & recycling
Staff clean-down of food service areas
Reset of the lounge, tables, bar surfaces & kitchenette
Cleaning supplies and consumables used on the night
This fee does not apply when using our in-house snack food options.
Can we hire the club’s BBQ?
Yes. We offer a large Blackstone gas BBQ for hire.
BBQ Hire (Standard Groups): $60 + GST

Large Blackstone gas BBQ
Full gas bottle
Cooking Oil
Tongs
Sharp knife
Cutting board

Can we bring our own BBQ?
For safety reasons, we request that private groups do not bring their own BBQs or gas cookers.
Do you have Kitchen Access?
Full cooking is not permitted. Kitchen access is for reheating, plating, assembling grazing tables, and storing food only.
$120 per event (prep only, no full cooking) Includes use of: • Commercial oven for reheating only • Bench space for plating and food prep • Sink + basic washing area • Dish and Glass Steriliser • Fridge space (limited) • Use of standard utensils & baking trays (if applicable)

What Happens if it Rains?
All confirmed bookings proceed as scheduled, operating under our Rain Plan. Bookings may only be cancelled or credited when the weather reaches force majeure or extreme conditions that make it unsafe to proceed, including situations where: - the greens are unplayable, - the clubrooms or surrounding areas are hazardous, - travel to or from the club is dangerous, - or conditions pose a genuine risk to health or safety. Examples include severe storms, lightning, flooding, official civil defence advisories, or other significant weather events. Forecasted rain, intermittent showers, cold temperatures, or unsettled weather do not qualify. Because bookings reserve rinks, staff, and club resources exclusively for your group, standard cancellation fees apply if the Client chooses not to proceed on the day.
What type of footwear can be worn on the greens?
Flat, soft-soled shoes • Flat sneakers/trainers with smooth bottoms • Bare feet – always welcome if your shoes aren’t green-friendly! What’s Not Allowed • No heels (even tiny ones!) • No leather soles – too slippery and damaging • No spiked, studded, rough or heavy-tread soles • No boots or work shoes
Will our group be shown how to play bowls and run a competition?
Every group at Mt Eden Bowling Club receives a friendly lawn bowls induction to get you started — how to hold the bowl, deliver safely, and understand the basics of play.
If your group would like more hands-on coaching, help setting up games, or someone to run a full competition for you, you’re welcome to book one of our experienced on-green hosts.
Experienced Bowler / On-Green Host — $100 per hour
Your very own bowls guru for the session: teaching newbies, keeping the scores honest, organising match play, and making sure the friendly rivalry stays friendly (especially when the bowls measure comes out).

FAQs
Hey there, bowling enthusiasts! Ready to hit the green? Here’s a fun rundown of what you can wear to keep your game smooth and the greens happy!
-
We’re easy to find—located at 17 Stokes Road, right in the heart of Mt Eden, with stunning views of Maungawhau / Mount Eden.
-
We want everyone to feel relaxed and welcome at Mt Eden Bowls - whether you’re here for Roll-Up, a social event, or just to enjoy the atmosphere.
To help keep things comfortable and respectiful for everyone, we ask all guests and players to follow a neat casual dress standard.
A few simple guidelines:
Please wear tidy, clean clothing.
Footwear should be appropriate for the greens.
Keep it tasteful - avoid clothing that’s over revealing, offensive, or intended for the beach or gym.
Our friendly team may have the final say on what’s appropriate, but we aim to keep things easy and inclusive.
Thanks for keeping Mt Eden Bowls a great place to play, relax and connect.
-

-
Flat is Where It’s At! You can rock flats (heel-less shoes) or even comfy sandals while playing. Just make sure they’re friendly to our greens!
-
Look for non-slip materials with a little bit of grip—nothing too wild, though!
-
No shoes that might damage the beautiful green surface! If your footwear isn’t up to par, you might be asked to switch it out for some barefoot shenanigans!
-
One-piece soles for a smooth glide.
No raised or attached heels, please!
Rounded edges for those sharp turns.
Indented non-slip designs are a must.
Keep it simple—no big ripples or crazy obstructions.
Let’s keep it fun and friendly on the green while ensuring we take care of it! Happy bowling!
